MedSpel – Gives Word Capabilities to Spell-check Medical Terms
Review by on
When I write an article I usually rely on Microsoft’s Office productivity suite to help me out when I misspell something. A misspelled word in Office Word is immediately highlighted so I can easily return to it and correct it. That sort of functionality is great for writing about software applications for example – not so much when you’re writing about diseases, and afflictions and other medical mumbo jumbo.

The simple truth of the matter is that there are a myriad of medical terms and not all of them are easy to spell. Furthermore, Microsoft Word may not know them. Luckily enough there is something you can do. You can use an application that will teach Word a thing or two about medical spelling.

The application I am talking about is the e-MedTools developed MedSpel. That’s the name of the application: MedSpel (as in Medical Spelling). There are several bits and pieces you are going to like about this application; and some you won’t. Starting on a positive note, here are the things you are going to like.

You will like that the MedSpell weighs in at less than 400KB. At such a lightweight size, the download will complete in no time at all. You will like that once downloaded, the application works fine with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7. It also works fine with Microsoft Word 2003 and Word 2007 (it will most likely work with Word 2010 when it will be released).

Last but not least, you will like what MedSpel does. The application enhances Word’s spell checker by adding a staggering 50,000 medical terms to the application’s dictionary. So when you’re typing away and come across a medical term, you can rely on the fact that MedSpel gave Word the capabilities to recognize and correct the erroneous spelling of that word.

The only thing that may put you off MedSpel is the fact that it is not freeware. On the bright side, the application isn’t that expensive.

If you need to write about medical stuff, and you want Word to recognize and correct all those difficult medical terms, then you definitely have to get MedSpel. It helps Word recognize some 50,000 medical terms.

Pros
  • Lightweight download
  • Works with XP, Vista and Windows 7
  • Works with Word 2003 and Word 2007
  • Includes nearly 50,000 medical terms

Cons
  • Not freeware
  • Only 3 out of 9 dictionaries are available in the trial version
